November: Mass and a talk by Fr. Art Wehr, S.J., on Thomas Merton, the noted Trappist monk and author, followed by an engaging discussion regarding Thomas Merton.
September: A breakfast mass presided over by Father Jerry McCourt S.J., of Saint Ignatius Parish, Sacramento. Father Jerry spoke after Mass on "The New Liturgy," followed by questions and discussion.
June: Feast Day of St. Thomas More Reception. STMS Celebrates 25 years on St. Thomas More's Feast Day! Retired Bishop Francis Quinn was the recipient of the first Father Sylvester McDermott Award and he provided, via Father Brenden O'Sullivan, a lively account of Father McDermott.
May: Fr. Jeremy Leatherby presided over early Mass in the Hopkins Room at Hawthorne Suites, in response to requests for an occasional breakfast meeting, and to those who asked for a meeting location closer to downtown.
April was the SIXTH ANNUAL JOINT MEETING with the J. Rueben Clark Society and the BYU Management Society, focusing on the Ethical Lessons we can learn from President Lincoln. MCLE Credit Approved.
March: Mass was presided over by Fr. Art Wehr, S.J., Associate Pastor, St. Ignatius Parish, Sacramento.
February: Fr. Anthony M. Garibaldi, O.F.M., Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Sacramento, presided over Mass
and discussed how he decided to become a priest. He also shared some thoughts on the Order of Friars Minor (OFM).January: Joint Luncheon with La Raza Lawyers of Sacramento - The Honorable Morrison C. England, Jr., District Judge of the United States District Court, Eastern District, and Professor Fred Galves of the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law presented, "Ethics, Professionalism, and Civility: Words to Remember and Practice."
2010
December: Feast of the Immaculate Conception - Mass presided over by Fr. Tom Piquado, S.J., St. Ignatius Parish.
November: STMS held its annual joint meeting with the J. Rueben Clark Society and the LDS Business Association, featuring University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law Professor Paton, on "Core Values and the New Landscape for Professionals" with .5 MCLE credit in Legal Ethics.
October: STMS co-sponsored the annual Red Mass at the Cathedral.
September: Mass was presided over by Fr. Jerry McCourt, S.J., associate pastor, St. Ignatius Church, Sacramento. In light of the "Ground Zero Mosque" controversy, we reflected on the 1965 Vatican II document Nostra Aetate ("In Our Times") ( http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_decl_19651028_nostra-aetate_en.html ) which discusses the relations of Christians and non-Christians.
May: Our last monthly gathering of the spring featured Father John Boll, St. Anthony's Parish, who reflected on retiring after 40 years as a priest.
April: Father Mike Newman, SDS (Society of the Divine Savior), presided at Mass. Father Mike retired in 2008 from 40 years of active ministry, including service as a seminary instructor, in youth ministry, and at the Sacramento and Chico State Newman Centers. He currently helps out at Our Divine Savior Parish in Chico, the Newman Catholic Communities, and St. Dominic Parish in Orland. March: Bishop Emeritus Francis Quinn presided at mass, giving a memorable homily and then took part in an animated discussion at lunch.
February: Father Jeremy Leatherby spoke on the Catholic priesthood, as well as his personal call to serve, which he experienced in the grotto at Notre Dame.
January: Father George Wanser, S.J., kindly filled in for Fr. Mike Newman.
2009
Father Art Wehr, S.J., Associate Pastor, St. Ignatius, Sacramento, returned to preside at our December 9th Mass and gave a compelling homily. A sociable lunch followed.
At our November 12th gathering, Father Michael Hebda presided at Mass and later discussed with us life as a Polish Catholic in Chicago. Among other things, we learned that Chicagoans, including non-Catholics, customarily say that they live in such-and-such parish as a way of identifying their neighborhood. Fr. Hebda is currently assigned to the Pastoral Center, Diocese of Sacramento, where he serves as Vicar Episcopal for Clergy, Personnel Director for Priests, and Director of Continuing Education for the Diocese of Sacramento. He is in residence at St. Anthony’s Parish.
The Diocesan Red Mass was held in October.
The Officers and Directors of STMS helped sponsor the Sacramento County Bar Association's Annual Bench-Bar Reception, held September 24, 2009.
Father Michael E. Moynahan, S.J., Associate Pastor, St. Ignatius Parish, Sacramento, presided at our September 9th Mass. Fr. Moynahan previously served at Gonzaga University, Spokane and has taught and written in the area of liturgy.
Tuesday, June 9, 2009 was our annual joint luncheon meeting with the J. Rueben Clark Society and the LDS Business Association, featuring Sacramento Superior Court Presiding Judge Jim Mize speaking on “Independent Judges - The Looming Crisis.” MCLE Approved - click HERE for flyer. Over 75 people attended this event, which was written up in the Sacramento Lawyer, September/October issue. STMS congratulates Presiding Judge Mize on being named Judge of the Year by the Sacramento County Bar Association, and is proud to once again co-sponsor this event.
At our May 13the meeting, Father Phil Wells, Associate Pastor, St. James Parish, Davis, presided. A special Marian devotion (May is the Month of Mary) was held before mass led by STMS Member Paul Starkey.
No meeting in April, as our normal meeting date would fall during Holy Week.
For our March 11th meeting, Father Art Wehr, S.J., St. Ignatius Parish, Sacramento, presided at Mass.
At our February 11th meeting, Father Tom Piquado, S.J., St. Ignatius Parish, Sacramento, presided at Mass.

Our April 8th - joint meeting featuring Justice Davis was held with the J.Reuben Clark Law Society and LDS Business Association - (Details). This meeting was written up in the September/October issue of the Sacramento Lawyer.

On Wednesday, December 12, 2007 (Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe), Father Fr. Robert S. Presutti, L.C. (Legionaries of Christ), Ph.D., President of the University of Sacramento, presided at Mass and spoke about the new University during lunch.

On Thursday, September 13, 2007, a special joint meeting featuring Kirk O. Hanson was held with the J.Reuben Clark Law Society and LDS Business Association, which provided MCLE credit in Ethics. This meeting was featured in the March/April issue of the Sacramento Lawyer.
On Wednesday, March 14, 2007. Father Philip Massetti, OSJ (Oblates of St. Joseph), from Mt. St. Joseph in Loomis presided and discussed the Minor Seminary and Noviate program.
2006 Newsletter (pdf): Fall 2006
For our December 2006 gathering, Fr. Anthony M. Garibaldi, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Sacramento, presided. After Mass, STMS members Richard and Anne Elbrecht shared with us a selection of photographs of Armenian churces in Eastern Turkey, with a focus on the city of Ani, whose cathedral just had its 1000-year anniversary. The Elbrechts have visited Turkey eight times, documenting the gradual disappearance of Armenian churches in Eastern Turkey, and are working with Cal. State University, Fresno, on a web exhibition.
At our November 2006 meeting, where Rev. Arthur Wehr, SJ, Parochial Vicar, St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, presided, we had special intentions and remembrances for our deceased members and friends.
Our October 2006 Meeting was held at Mercy McMahon and honored Father Charles "Sylvester" McDermott, who has been the liason between STMS and the Diocese of Sacramento since the inception of STMS in the 1980's. Rev. T. Brendan O'Sullivan presided at the Mass, and Fr. McDermott was given an award at lunch, which was captured by the Catholic Herald .
On Tuesday, September 12, 2006, a special joint meeting featuring Justice Nicholson of the Third District Court of Appeal was held with the J.Reuben Clark Law Society and LDS Business Association, which was covered in the November/December 2006 issue of Sacramento Lawyer.
